Additional Police Officers Hired in Plumsted
|
|
|
|
Plumsted Township will begin the New Year of 2010 with two additional new Police
Officers, to bring the total number of uniformed officers to thirteen (13),
highest in the Police Department’s history. The Township Committee authorized
the appointment of the two new Police Officers, at their December 30th
year-end public meeting, at the recommendation of the Department’s O.I.C.
(Officer In Charge), Sergeant Matthew Petrecca.
Sgt.
Petrecca recommended and was granted approval to utilize the two new officers as
part time Special Law Enforcement Officers to reduce overtime costs and schedule
the new officers on an as needed basis to provide a minimum level of at least
two Police Officers on patrol duty.
The
first new officer, Gary Schaal, graduated from the
Ocean County Police
Training
Academy
in May of 2008 and was employed with the Seaside Heights Police Department until
being hired by Plumsted
Township.
The
second new officer, Christopher Quackenbush, graduated from the Ocean County
Police
Training
Academy in May of 2009 and
was previously employed with the Ship Bottom Police Department.
“Cops In Shops Grant”
The
Township Committee authorized the filing of a grant application to the N.J.
Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) that administers the “Cops In Shops
Grant,” at the recommendation of Plumsted’s Chief Law Enforcement Officer,
Sergeant Petrecca. The “Cops In Shops” program will provide funding to pay a
minimum of two to four off duty Plumsted Police Officers at their overtime rate
for training and patrol time by the ABC’s Enforcement Unit to properly implement
undercover operations identifying underage persons and false IDs.
The
“Cops In Shops” program also targets adults who purchase alcoholic beverages for
underage individuals. The grant program provides additional funding for
advertising and educating youth, adults and parents about the legal
repercussions of underage drinking through the use of posters and decals at the
point of sale, as well as, news releases. Deterrence is a major component of the
“Cops In Shops” program.
